Symptoms of Colorectal Cancer

The most common symptom of colorectal cancer is no symptoms at all. That is why screening everyone over the age of 50 is important. Screening aides in colorectal cancer prevention. Colorectal cancer is unique among cancers in that it is preventable. Yes, preventable. By screening people who are not experiencing symptoms, doctors can discover and remove polyps. Left alone, many polyps will develop colorectal cancer. A polyp is a piece of tissue, frequently attached to a stalk, in the lining of the colon.

If you experience any of the symptoms listed below for more than a few days, please discuss colorectal cancer screening with your doctor.

  • A change in bowel habits
  • Blood in the stool
  • Diarrhea, constipation, vomiting
  • Feeling that the bowel does not empty completely
  • Narrower than normal stools
  • Abdominal discomfort–gas, bloating, fullness, cramping
  • Narrower than normal stools
  • Unexpected anemia
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Constant tiredness
