Many people view colorectal cancer as an old man’s disease. It actually strikes men and women almost equally. And while 90% of cases are discovered in people over the age of 50, there would appear to be an increase in younger patients. I think it would be fair to say that patients under the age of 40 that present with symptoms of colorectal cancer wait longer to be diagnosed. Doctors do not immediately think of offering younger patients colonoscopies to eliminate colorectal cancer. Many times, they assume the problem is irritable bowel or Crohn’s disease and waste valuable time. Tomorrow we’ll cover symptoms of colorectal cancer.
